Every October, Leicester joins with the rest of the UK to celebrate Black History Month (BHM). Come and experience a series of events, exhibitions and conversations that recognise and rejoice in Leicester’s incredibly diverse heritage, and celebrate the history and cultural contribution that African and Caribbean communities have made to the East Midlands over the last eighty years.
The Black History Month centres around a unifying theme each year, and 2019’s is Archiving the Past, Reflecting the Future – the idea that we can better understand the present by looking back to our past.Proceedings kicks off with the Launch Party on 27th September – and then there’s a jam-packed programme of exciting events throughout October! For art-lovers, the headline exhibition Archiving the Past, Reflecting the Future is open across the month, or you can dip into temporary exhibit Knowledge of the Unseen. If you’re after something more interactive, why not try an African Tie Dye Workshop, African Basket Making or African Drumming? There’s plenty to keep you entertained, with music, comedy, film and theatre performances; or hear about some of today’s diversity challenges with talks such as ‘Debating the African Perspective: Pre Colonialism’, ‘Blackchat: Integrated Casting’ or ‘Ancestry Talks with Paul Crooks’.
Whether you’re after something light-hearted or something to make you think, there’s events for every appetite, so be sure to join this wonderful Black History Month of celebration in Leicester! Located just outside Leicester’s city centre, the Holiday Inn Leicester - Wigston offers the perfect base from which to enjoy this eclectic month of events in Leicester.
